Battered and Weary German Finds New Life at
New Leaf Detox Resort

Anyone who has paid any attention to the
preparations for the 2008 Summer Olympics in
Beijing, China has seen that the country’s
government has taken huge strides in trying
to lower the overwhelming amount of smog in
the city that is produced mainly by the
large number of manufacturing plants. As
well, many of these manufacturing plants
have come under intense scrutiny after it
was found that many of their products
contained hazardous and toxic substances.
For example, a few children’s toys were
found to have had high levels of lead in the
paint used to make the toys. There are
numerous documented cases of China showing a
lack of concern for the environment, and
Beijing is right in the middle of it.
 “The
Chinese government is adamantly working to
fix these problems,” says Rolf Dietmar, who
is an advisor on Chinese commerce and helps
to educate the Chinese government and
private business sectors on better and
cleaner ways of doing things. Rolf says,
“They want the words ‘Made in China’ to mean
it is a good product. Not a cheap and poorly
built one.”
Rolf has been working in China since 1998,
and he has not had one vacation since. So,
earlier this year, Rolf decided that since
the Chinese government and businesses, and
thus his need to go to work, were going to
come to a standstill during the two week
long Olympics, it was the perfect time to
finally take a vacation.
“I literally felt exhausted, overweight and
very unhealthy,” he said. “I have been
living in a much polluted city for a long
time so there is no way to know how much or
many toxins and different types of
pollutants I’ve ingested.” Rolf said the
levels of cancer rates have been steadily
rising in Beijing.
